Team Building/Cooperative Challenges

*Cooperative vs. Competitive Games: Student awareness of learning environment and class structure/focus.

Scatagory (Coop & Comp index cards are placed in middle of court. On go teams race to the middle picking up one card at a time racing back to their group. Second person cannot take off until the 1st person returns. When all cards run out groups divide cards up into either the coop category or comp category.  Bring students together to discuss which concepts they have put into which category and why?)

The Eye:  In same groups participants sit in a circle looking at the ground.  On teachers signal students quickly look directly at another person in their group if they make 'eye contact' they have a staring contest. Person that blinks first or laughs first has a fitness challenge to complete and is 'out'.

Chain Tag or Amoeba: Designate 2 students to be 'the link or Amoeba'. When the 'link' person tags another student they must join hands (chain) and try to tag another student.  Once there is a group of 4 they will split off into groups of 2 again until all students have been caught.

Balloon Team Challenges & Relay Races

Wednesday

Team Building/Cooperative Challenges

*Cooperative vs. Competitive Games: Student awareness of learning environment and class structure/focus.

Hoop Hop: Scatter hula hoops around the gym floor. Call out and instruction for traveling around the space (not going into hoops).  When a number is called out students race to a hula hoop trying to get that number of students into the hoop.  Any student not in a hoop or with out the correct number of students in that hoop has a fitness challenge to complete and are 'out' To help avoid students from changing or jumping in a hoop I have students pull the hoop up to their waist once they have the correct number in their hoop.  (closes the hoop for say)

Raft: Divide Class into two groups (3 for larger classes) Each group is given 2 mats. Start the teams at one end of gym. On teachers signal students goal is to move the team from one end of the floor to the opposite end with out stepping on the floor. Each team is given a cannon ball/ball to use against another team.  if a team member is hit by a ball they are knocked off and have to go back to the beginning. Object of the challenge is to have as many players to the other side as possible in the time allotted.

Pipeline: Divide class into teams. Each team gets a golf ball, some rails (pvc pipe) and a bucket. The object of the game is to roll the ball down the rials and get it to land inside the bucket first.  However, the rails must be connected to each other to save the ball. So, students at the beginning must run to the end after the ball leaves their rail to prevent it from hitting the floor.  If ball drops out to the floor teams must start over from the beginning.
